[Background] The story is told from Katniss Everdeen’s point of view, so the details we get come either from her memory of Peeta, from Peeta’s mouth himself, or from what we know about the country of Panem in narration. Panem sprouted from what was once North America, and the country consists of one massive city aptly named the Capitol which controls the rest of the continent, which consists of thirteen Districts, named one through thirteen. Seventy five years ago, the Districts rose up in rebellion against the Capitol and uprisings were seen throughout the Districts. Many people died, but the Capitol one. They were believed to have destroyed District 13 in the process, and the districts were scared back into submission.

As a reminder of the districts’ foolish uprising, the Capitol began holding the Hunger Games; a tournament meant to remind the districts of their foolishness and also to show the Capitol’s graciousness. Two Tributes are selected each year from each remaining district at an event called the reaping; creating a total of twenty four competitors to fight to the death for the chance to be the one single surviving victor who will get to return home to fame, fortune and exemption from future Games. For some districts it is considered an honor to be chosen at the reapings while for others it is the source of endless nightmares. You become eligible at the age of 12 and remain eligible each year until after your 18th year.

Each child’s name is put in at least once each year, so your first year you have at least one and by your last you have at least seven. However, they also are allowed to put in their names extra times in order to get supplies such as grain and oil. So those who are better off end up with their names in less times than those who are suffering and need the little extra food to keep their families going.

Peeta hails from District 12, one of the poorer districts, known primarily for its coal mining. It is a rather sad district, which looks more beaten down than others, full of soot and dirt and people starving. Those born in the Seam are far worse off than those born into the family of Merchants and the like, such as Peeta. Although while he was never starving, his family lived off of the bread that was stale or burnt which no one would buy. Their life was better than others, but it was by no means good. But at least he was fed; able to grow up fairly healthy and strong.

His father was a quiet, yet kind man of few words and his mother was a strict, even angry sort of woman. It was his father who pointed Katniss out to Peeta, telling him that he had been in love with her mother but that she had chosen a coal miner instead. And it was that first day of school that he looked at the girl his father pointed out to him and listened to her sing and then almost immediately fell in love with her. He watched her from afar for many years, but never managed to gather the courage to speak with her in all the years they went to school together.

But he watched her closely. He paid attention when his father bought her illegally poached squirrels; to the great skill she possessed in being able to shoot them through the eye each time and not damaging the meat. And he was also to be thanked for saving her life once. Or she seems to see it that one. One night, when she had been unable to obtain any food for her family, he burnt the bread so that he might give it to her. While it resulted in a strike to the face from his mother, he was able to give her almost two full loaves. They didn’t speak, but it was something neither of them forgot.

While he was still in school, he was still responsible for helping out at his parents’ bakery; helping take loaves out of the oven, putting them in, and also icing the intricate cakes they sold. He was something of a natural artist, and he’d had a lot of practice which later developed into a love for painting and a great ability to camouflage himself.

Of course… those things didn’t present themselves until the seventy-fourth Hunger Games, when he was selected as Tribute alongside Katniss Everdeen. It was the most unfortunate turn of events… being chosen as tribute alongside the girl he was in love with.

But this made for a great strategy. Their mentor had Peeta use that in his interview and they became known as the ‘Star-Crossed Lovers of District Twelve’. It earned them popularity and sponsors no doubt, but for him, it was painful, because while it was used by Katniss as a ploy to keep them alive in the arena, it wasn’t the real love he longed for. But he did at last finally have a reason to talk to her. And while some conversations ended up very poorly, his feelings didn’t change.

Before the games they were given a week to prepare. They were paraded in front of the Capitol, primped and made pretty for their interviews, and offered training in various areas. They were allowed to move around to training stations as they saw fit. The most noticeable ability he could show was that of camouflage, which he showed amazing skills with.

In the arena, he went out of his way to protect Katniss, although it almost got him killed. It was the Gamemakers’ announcement that two could survive if from the same district that drove Katniss back to Peeta and ultimately saved his life. And she used the Star-Crossed Lovers title for all it was worth, vying for gifts that could help them get through this. And she risked her life to save him, despite his wish that she wouldn’t. However, it was a trick, and in the end they revoked the announcement and left Peeta and Katniss as the last two Tributes standing, thinking it would make a great finale. But instead, Katniss made a show of attempting a double suicide with Peeta rather than letting either of them die for the other and the Gamemaker was forced to stop them and crown them both. A mistake that later cost him his life.

However, it grew into something more. What was just an attempt to save them both seemed to set off a spark and the idea of rebellion resurfaced in many districts, while they were settling into their new lives, having been allowed to return to District 12. While they go on the Victory Tour half a year later, certain districts begin to rebel. Districts such as 11 and 8 begin showing their dissent and then start fighting.

Meanwhile Peeta and Katniss have their own problems, with President Snow threatening Katniss and pressuring her to prove to the world that she didn’t want a rebellion, that she was driven mad by love. This leads to a strange point in her relationship with Peeta. They agree to get married, but it’s not what he wanted, really. It’s only to appease the Capitol. All the same, to keep them all safe, he proposes to her and Snow offers to give them a grand wedding at the Capitol. But he isn’t convinced and the uprisings don’t stop. At that point Katniss breaks and tries to plan an escape – trying to gather the people she cares about and attempt to run away to safety, away from the Capitol and away from the Districts. However, after seeing the changes made to District 12 and watching Gale publicly whipped until he fell unconscious, she gives up on that, and decides she’ll do what she can to support the rebellion and fight the Capitol instead.

That doesn’t stop the wedding plans however. But something does. The announcement of the Quarter Quell, a special Game held every twenty-five years. Each has a special twist to the normal rules of the Hunger Games. And this one is that the tributes will be drawn from the names of the surviving victors. This means that no matter what, Katniss will be returning to the arena again for a second year. Without question, Peeta prepares to go in with her. And his only goal? To keep her alive.

They go through the motions again, but this time things seem a lot more serious. Katniss and Peeta had taken to sleeping together to try and keep the nightmares at bay, but once they're in the arena, little can help them. Though the announcement of Katniss' pregnancy is certainly meant to keep them in the hearts of the people and hopefully win them sympathy and sponsors.

When they enter the arena, it's a perfect circle. Peeta can't swim, but luckily they got floaties to wear. It isn't until after facing a number of hardships and losing a teammate that they realize that the arena is a clock, and that the time dictates what horrors try to kill them at what time and in what area.

I've taken Peeta from the arena, after this revelation.

[Personality] Peeta is a teenager accustomed to a plain, rather sheltered life in a District that is considered poor and unpopular, so while things of great value and comfort are foreign to him and a vast, well-cooked meal is still less common to him than most, Peeta is the sort who came out of all of that with a bright outlook and a sturdy mindset. He learned early on to make use of what he is given, to be resourceful and not to waste anything. He may have suffered from his mother’s abusiveness, but he doesn’t seem any weaker as a result. In fact, he gives off a strong, well-rounded personality and amiable nature fit for a good-natured boy with a pure heart such as his.

When Katniss and probably most of the other tributes were concerned with just trying to win the Games or they ways they might die, Peeta was worried about trying to preserve his self; finding a way to show the Capitol that he wasn’t just a piece in their Games, that he was still him and they couldn’t change him. He admitted that he would probably kill out of self-preservation when the time came, but that he wanted to play and fight on his terms, a difficult concept that even he himself wasn’t entirely sure of. But it was important to him.

Love is probably his biggest weakness, and he knows it. But even so he decides for himself that he would do anything to protect Katniss, keep her alive and make sure that she can go home, even though he knows that means that he can’t. This doesn’t change during his second time in the arena. Even if he managed to get away the first time because of Katniss’ crazy double suicide plan, he knows it won’t be the same the second time around and chooses Katniss’ life over his own, knowing that he couldn’t live without her.

What most people see is a young, bright-eyed man who can be just as soft as he can be intense. He’s an inviting individual; someone who seems happy to engage others in conversation, talk about himself or others when asked, and keeps a friendly demeanor. He tries hard not to let negative emotions such as jealousy or anger cloud his judgment, and can remain civil despite such feelings. It doesn’t stop him from doing the right thing when necessary, as he proves when he assists Gale after his public whipping, despite his pain and jealousy as he watches Katniss become so distraught for Gale’s well being. He really tries to give everyone a fair chance before judging them, and even then you see him trying to find the good in everyone, even with the people of the Capitol, who are, to the people of the Districts, seen very negatively.

But what most find charming about him is his ability with words. Katniss often finds herself adapting to approaches that let him do the talking, because he’s known for saying the right things; playing things up just the right way. He speaks clearly, persuasively - and not always just acting. His sincerity is also a part of his strength. It’s also a natural gift. If he has any choice in the matter, he speaks honestly, albeit with polite restraint. Even when he confessed his love for Katniss, while it was a strategy to earn them support, it wasn’t a lie. None of it was a lie for him. But he did use it, not for himself, but for her – in hopes of gaining popularity and getting Katniss out alive, whereas if it weren’t for that need, he might have never confessed those feelings. Of course there are times when he does have to use his acting abilities to his advantage. For him, he would rather aim to focus on safe subjects, easing away from dangerous topics, rather than spouting falseness. But he can act extremely well when he has to, creating convincing covers for him or Katniss on several occasions.

He’s so likeable that it’s hard to imagine, but he actually does suffer shyness when embarrassment is involved. It’s this that kept him from speaking with Katniss until they were thrown together unfortunately for the Games.

Peeta does get emotional, and he does say things he regrets from time to time. That is because he is actually a very emotional young man. Like anyone else, he has attachments, suffers disappointments, gets upset, says things he doesn’t mean, gets depressed for a while… But he’s also not the type who wants to live like that. If it goes on long enough without correction, he is the type who will admit his faults and try to set things right again. He dislikes arguments and fighting and tries to avoid it if he can. He’d rather walk away from a bad situation and let feelings cool down rather than pressing on and possibly making things worse than they have to be.

That’s not to say that he thinks its right to run away from issues. On rare occasions he’ll have a streak of secrecy, though he tries to avoid keeping secrets. He doesn’t like it. When others don’t inform him of things he feels that he should have been told, it hurts him deeply. He wants people to be honest with him and wants them to be able to trust him. He would do almost anything in his power for the people he cares about and respects, but he also wants to be given the same amount of respect at least.

But while he might look a bit soft at first glance, that’s not all he is. In fact, he can be smart and cunning as well. He’s no fool. He knows not to underestimate others from his times spent in the arena, and he also learned a number of survival techniques. While he does space out from time to time, he does try his hardest to stay focused on the things that are important. With that, he also knows he has to be realistic and keep his priorities in mind. He often reminds himself that he is limited and that he can only do so much, so he has to keep in mind what is really important.

He has a bad habit of underestimating himself though. While he isn’t the best at keeping a low profile or fighting with weapons, he is very strong, and he has a number of basic skills under his belt as well as great determination and devotion. When they are informed of their fate for the Quarter Quell, he shows it very clearly, acting the part of a strict trainer, holding back his usually soft, affectionate manner and becoming very much focused on training for the Games. He pushes himself as much as he pushes Haymitch and Katniss and forces them to be at their best. Of course he does it for their sake, but it shows another extreme side he has, and also shows how he’s grown. Unlike the first time into the arena, he prepares with fervor; taking notes and learning about all the possible opponents. Instead of fear, he shows determination and refuses to let any weakness win out.

As straight-forward as he tends to be around friends and those he tends to trust, if you know him he might even seem a bit predictable. It’s not hard to tell what his priorities are. The first is usually Katniss and the other people close to him follow after. He is somewhere in the middle of that list usually.

He is also compassionate; extending whatever he can to those in need. Unlike Katniss he doesn’t hate being in others’ debts, because it happens often enough, and if he gives someone something in return it’s not because he’s trying to erase his debt but because he’s grateful. And it doesn’t just extend to the one who did it for him, but to their friends and families as well, which he shows when he tries to bestow upon the families of Thresh and Rue a month’s worth of their winnings each year during the Victory Tour.

[Specialties/Abilities] While he underestimates his abilities, he isn’t a fool. He can be cunning when he needs to. On top of that, his days of working with his family have made him strong. He can lift 100 pound bags of flour over his shoulder easily. He’s also learned to use a knife and other weapons on basic levels, although he’s far from proficient with them. He can use them if necessary, but he’s not likely to be a match for anyone with real training. Though his ability to underestimate himself and put others before himself is easily another weakness that can get to him at times. He refuses to underestimate others and does his best to learn about them instead, studying fighting techniques and personalities so he knows how best to try and deal with the people who might prove dangerous.

But he’s amazing with camouflage and as a painter. He can paint himself into a tree or a muddy bank and you’d really have to be looking for him to find him. He’s also capable of baking bread and cakes and other pastries at a professional level.

The ability to lead and persuade with words is also a skill he has.

[Affection] Any kind of affection is allowed. He's not likely to get too affectionate back though. Hugs are okay but he saves the rest for his fiance.

[Fighting] Sure. He'll do his best to survive.

[Other Permissions] Yep, go ahead, just let me know.

[Other Facts] His favorite color is a sunset-colored orange.
